How to unlock and collect submarine pieces

Submarine pieces are a Story Mode set tied to Abigail, whose late husband's submarine lies in pieces off the coast. They only appear once Michael has met her at the Sonar Collections Dock, and finding all 30 unlocks What Lies Beneath.

Buy the Sonar Collections Dock in Paleto Cove for $250,000. It goes on sale after The Merryweather Heist, and any of the three characters can buy it. Once Blitz Play is done, Michael meets Abigail there in Death at Sea. The pieces only appear and count once that mission has started, and after that Michael, Franklin and Trevor can all collect them.

Abigail gives you a Dinghy with scuba gear, and leaving the boat out at sea puts the gear on. In the Dinghy, the map marks search areas in green, and close to a piece a sonar ping on the radar shows where it is. A Submersible also spawns at the dock once you own it. Watch for sharks, and keep an eye out for extras like briefcases and weapons near some pieces.

The numbers on this page are our own. Other lists number the pieces differently, so match them by place, not number, and collect them in any order. Several sit at the same wreck, so clear a wreck in one dive.

What Lies Beneath and Abigail

Once all 30 pieces are found, What Lies Beneath starts with Abigail at the dock. Only Michael gets the payoff, and it is small: Abigail pays you $10. Afterwards you choose whether to kill her or let her go.

The set is about the story, not the money.

  • Unlocks What Lies Beneath with Abigail
  • A $10 payoff and a choice: kill Abigail or let her go

Submarine Pieces FAQ

How do you start collecting submarine pieces?

Buy the Sonar Collections Dock in Paleto Cove for $250,000 with any character (it goes on sale after The Merryweather Heist). After Blitz Play, visit it as Michael to meet Abigail and start Death at Sea. The pieces only appear and count once that mission has started.

What happens when you collect all the submarine parts?

What Lies Beneath starts with Abigail at the dock. She pays Michael $10, and then you choose whether to kill her or let her go.

What does Abigail give you for the submarine parts?

Just $10. The reward is the end of her story, where you decide whether Abigail lives or dies.

Can Franklin or Trevor collect submarine pieces?

Yes. Once Michael has started Death at Sea, all three characters can collect pieces. Only Michael gets the payoff at the end.

Do you need the Submersible to find submarine pieces?

No. Abigail's Dinghy is the search boat: in it, the map marks search areas in green, and a sonar ping on the radar shows where a piece is once you are close. Leaving the boat at sea puts the scuba gear on so you can dive for it.
