GTA Online Beginner's Roadmap (2026): From New Character to Your First Million
The best way to start GTA Online in 2026: create your character on an Enhanced platform, use the Career Builder's GTA$ 4,000,000 grant wisely, register as a VIP the moment you have GTA$ 50,000 banked, play the free First Dose missions for the Acid Lab, and save toward the Kosatka. This roadmap walks that exact path, stage by stage, with every price current as of August 2026. A lot of the beginner advice still ranking on Google was written for a game that no longer exists, so if you searched how to start GTA Online in 2026, this is the version that matches what you will actually see on screen.

First fork: Enhanced or Legacy?
Everything about your opening depends on which version of the game you launch. On PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Enhanced), new characters go through the Career Builder and start with a GTA$ 4,000,000 grant. That is the version this roadmap assumes, and it is by far the better place to begin.
On PS4, Xbox One, and PC Legacy there is no Career Builder and no grant. You start with the classic tutorial (which is skippable) and earn everything from zero. The roadmap still works for you, just slower: skip straight to the first-session and early-money stages below, and treat the Career Builder section as a preview of what an eventual move to Enhanced gets you.
Career Builder: the one choice you cannot redo
The Career Builder runs once, at new-character creation. It hands you GTA$ 4,000,000 and makes you spend at least GTA$ 3,000,000 of it across at least one property, one vehicle, and one weapon before you enter free roam. Whatever you do not spend carries over, capped at GTA$ 1,000,000. You are not really being given four million in cash; you are being given a funded shopping trip, so the property you pick matters far more than the leftover money.
There are four careers, each anchored to a different business:
Career | What you get | Pick this if |
|---|---|---|
Gunrunner | Bunker | You mostly play solo and want steady background income while you do other things |
Nightclub Owner | Nightclub | You plan to buy more businesses later; the Nightclub gets better with every one you add |
Biker | Clubhouse plus an MC business | You play with friends and want group activities from day one |
Executive | CEO office plus a cargo warehouse | You want the CEO route and cargo work, ideally with a friend or two helping |
If you are torn, Gunrunner is the safest solo default and Nightclub Owner is the strongest long-term pick for players who know they will keep investing. One housekeeping note: the Career Builder has made the old Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack largely redundant for new players, so do not feel pressured to buy it.
Your first session in free roam
Once you land in Los Santos proper, spend your first session on setup rather than chasing money. Open the pause menu and start an invite-only session; you will read why in the safety section below. Do the jobs and phone calls the game pushes at you, since early contact missions pay your first bills and rank you up quickly.
Two cheap purchases are worth making almost immediately if the Career Builder cash did not already cover them. A garage keeps your cars stored and safe from despawning, and the cheapest in the game is Unit 124 Popular Street at GTA$ 25,000. A high-end apartment unlocks heist hosting later, and the cheapest with a heist planning room is Del Perro Heights Apartment 7 at GTA$ 200,000. Budget a small daily overhead too: properties charge modest fees each in-game day, and new players are sometimes startled by the first bill.
Your character's stats (stamina, shooting, driving and the rest) improve as you play, and you do not need to grind them on purpose this early. When you do want to max them, our guide on how to max out your skills in GTA Online covers the fastest method for every stat.
Ranks 1 to 12: first paydays and what rank actually gates
Your first money comes from contact missions, free roam events, and Simeon. At rank 10, Simeon's Export Requests open up: steal the listed cars, deliver them, get paid. Street cars you find in traffic can also be sold at Los Santos Customs, roughly one sale per in-game day, and only cheaper retail cars under about GTA$ 100,000 are accepted, so treat it as pocket money between missions rather than a career.
Several one-off quest lines pay a few hundred thousand in total and are ideal at this stage because they cost nothing to start. The Treasure Hunt and the Navy Revolver challenge are the two we recommend first.
Rank matters less than most old guides claim. Here is what it actually gates at Ammu-Nation:
Weapon | Unlock rank |
|---|---|
Micro SMG | 5 |
Combat Pistol | 9 |
SMG | 11 |
Sniper Rifle | 21 |
Assault Rifle | 24 |
Carbine Rifle | 42 |
Grenade Launcher | 60 |
Heavy Sniper | 90 |
RPG | 100 |
Minigun | 120 |
The one big rank milestone is 12: with rank 12 and a high-end apartment you can host the classic apartment heists (the Fleeca Job needs only two players). Beyond that, the myth to unlearn is that modern content is rank-locked. Cayo Perico, the Casino and Doomsday heists, the Agency, and every business gate on money, property, story progress, and registering as a CEO, VIP, or MC President, not on rank. You are never "too low level" for the good stuff; you are only too broke.
Staying safe: sessions beat rank, every time
A level 5 and a level 500 are equally shootable. Your real protections are session choice and Passive Mode, not a rank shield.
Session choice is the modern answer, and it is stronger than most older guides let on. Since The Criminal Enterprises update in July 2022, businesses and their resupply and sell missions run in invite-only sessions. That means you can do essentially all of your money-making alone or with friends, in a lobby griefers cannot enter. Make invite-only your default and public lobbies become something you visit by choice, not a tax you pay.
When you do want a public session, Passive Mode is there as a soft shield: it stops other players from damaging you while it is active, with some restrictions on when you can use it. Between the two tools, getting griefed in 2026 is mostly opt-in.
What to buy first (and what to skip)
The single best early vehicle purchase is the Armored Kuruma. It costs GTA$ 698,250 at Southern San Andreas Super Autos, but completing the Fleeca Job drops it to a GTA$ 525,000 trade price, and its armored cabin trivializes most contact missions. Do Fleeca first, then buy it; that order saves you GTA$ 173,250.
The Buzzard attack helicopter is the classic second target at GTA$ 1,750,000, with no rank gate on the purchase today. Better yet, you may not need to buy it at all early on: a registered VIP or CEO can call one in through the Interaction Menu for GTA$ 25,000 per spawn, free if you own one as a Pegasus vehicle. Fly the rented version for a while before deciding whether owning it is worth it to you.
What to skip: the flashy stuff. The Oppressor Mk II, Deluxo, and Toreador are mid-game purchases that cost several times your first million; they are goals, not starting points. And be skeptical of guides promising legacy free-car offers; most have long expired, so check in game before counting on one.
Register as a VIP at GTA$ 50,000
This is the earliest repeatable money unlock most new players miss. Once you have GTA$ 50,000 in the bank, open the Interaction Menu and register as a VIP. The GTA$ 50,000 is a threshold check, not a payment; nothing is deducted, no office is needed, and it works in any session type, including invite-only. A VIP session lasts 4 hours.
Being a VIP unlocks VIP Work between missions. The two solo staples are Headhunter, which pays GTA$ 20,000 base and up to around GTA$ 30,000, and Sightseer, which pays GTA$ 20,000 base and up to around GTA$ 25,000, both as of August 2026. Run them as filler between everything else and the income adds up fast. Our VIP missions overview covers the whole system, including the step up to CEO.
Your first business: the Acid Lab
The 2026 consensus first business for new players is the Acid Lab, because most of it is free. The six First Dose missions cost nothing to play and award the Brickade 6x6, the truck the lab lives in, for free. From there, activating the lab through Mutt costs GTA$ 750,000 (GTA+ members currently have that fee waived), and that is the whole buy-in: no property purchase, no real estate decision, and it is drivable, so your business comes with you.
If your Career Builder choice already gave you a bunker, nightclub, or MC business, run that alongside it. If you started on Legacy or spent your grant elsewhere, the Acid Lab is the cheapest serious income stream that needs no other property first. Our Acid Lab business guide covers upgrades, sourcing, and sell strategy.
The road to your first million (and the second)
Stack the pieces above and the first million arrives faster than you expect: contact missions and Simeon work, VIP Work between everything, quest-line payouts, and Acid Lab sell missions in an invite-only session. As you push past the first million, two anchor properties define the classic progression: the cheapest CEO office is Maze Bank West at GTA$ 1,000,000, and the cheapest MC clubhouse is Great Chaparral at GTA$ 200,000, with the cheapest nightclub at about GTA$ 1,080,000 and the cheapest bunker at about GTA$ 1,165,000 if the Career Builder did not already hand you one.
Your first genuine mid-game target is the Kosatka submarine at GTA$ 2,200,000, listed on Warstock once you have met Miguel Madrazo at The Music Locker. It unlocks the Cayo Perico heist, the game's signature solo heist, which costs a GTA$ 100,000 setup fee per run after your first. It is a savings goal, not a first buy; get there through the loop above rather than starving yourself of the Kuruma and VIP registration to rush it.
For the full picture of which activities pay best per hour once you have options, our solo money making guide ranks every method; this roadmap deliberately stops where that guide begins.
GTA+, and the freebies that no longer exist
GTA+ is Rockstar's optional subscription at US$ 7.99 per month on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Enhanced). The headline perk for a new player is the GTA$ 500,000 monthly stipend, and since November 2025 the subscription also includes access to GTA Online itself on consoles. It is a convenience, not a requirement; nothing in this roadmap needs it.
One warning about outdated freebie advice, because it wastes real time: Prime Gaming rewards for GTA Online ended in March 2023. Any guide telling you to link Amazon Prime for weekly GTA$ is describing a program that no longer exists. When in doubt, trust what you can see in the in-game menus over what an old article promises.
FAQ
Is it worth starting GTA Online with GTA 6 coming?
GTA 6 arrives on November 19, 2026, and GTA Online continues to receive weekly updates and events today. If the loop described in this roadmap sounds fun, months of play are absolutely worth having; the game is not winding down in the meantime. Play it because you want to play it now, not as an investment in what comes next.
Can I use the Career Builder more than once?
No. Rockstar's wording is that it can only be experienced once, and an existing character cannot go back to it. Do not plan around a second GTA$ 4,000,000 grant from a new character; treat the choice as permanent.
Can you play GTA Online solo?
Almost entirely, yes. Businesses and their supply and sell missions run in invite-only sessions, VIP Work is soloable, the Acid Lab is built for solo play, and Cayo Perico is designed to be completed alone. Heists are the exception: the Doomsday and Diamond Casino heists need at least two players, and the classic apartment heists need a crew (even the smallest, the Fleeca Job, needs two).
What business should I buy first?
The Acid Lab. The First Dose missions that unlock it are free, the Brickade 6x6 is awarded free, and the GTA$ 750,000 activation is the cheapest business buy-in that needs no other property first as of August 2026.
How do I avoid griefers?
Play in invite-only sessions, where all business and most money work now functions, and use Passive Mode when you choose to be in a public lobby. Session choice is the real shield, not your rank.
Do Prime Gaming rewards still work for GTA Online?
No. The Prime Gaming partnership ended in March 2023. Ignore any guide, video, or site that lists it as a current money method.
