GTA 6 Release Date and Preload

GTA 6 comes out on Thursday, November 19, 2026. The date has moved twice: Rockstar originally targeted a 2025 window, shifted to May 26, 2026 (announced in May 2025), then locked in the final November 19, 2026 date in November 2025. There is no sign of another delay, and preorders are already open.

You won't be playing early. There is no early-access tier on any edition. Digital preload starts on November 12, 2026, a week before launch, so you can have the game downloaded and ready to go at release. The full preorder and preload breakdown, including which edition makes sense for you, lives in our preorder guide, linked in the editions section below.

For the full timeline, every launch-week date and where things stand on another delay, see our GTA 6 release date guide.

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC

At launch, GTA 6 is a console game: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that's the entire announced platform list.

There is no PC version announced. No date, no PC storefront listing, no system requirements. For historical context, GTA V launched on consoles in September 2013 and reached PC on April 14, 2015, roughly 18 months later. That precedent is why most PC players expect a port eventually, but Rockstar has confirmed nothing for GTA 6. Until that changes, treat any PC release window you see as guesswork (more on that in the speculation section below).

The Setting: Vice City and the State of Leonida

GTA 6 takes place in and around Vice City, Rockstar's modern take on Miami, set inside the state of Leonida, a reimagined Florida. This is the series' first return to Vice City since the PS2 era, now built as a full open state rather than a single city.

Rockstar has named six regions so far:

  • Vice City, the central city

  • The Leonida Keys, a stretch of island keys

  • Grassrivers

  • Mount Kalaga, the state's high country

  • Port Gellhorn, a port town

  • Ambrosia

Beyond the city itself, Rockstar has shown wetlands, coastline, and open countryside across the state. Rockstar calls Leonida a "massive world", but it has never put an official size number on it. Our fan-made GTA 6 map shows the shape of Leonida, and our GTA 6 map guide breaks down every region, neighborhood, and landmark Rockstar has officially named.

Characters and Story: Jason, Lucia, and the Cast

GTA 6 has two playable leads: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Lucia is the first woman Rockstar has written as a fully voiced lead in a mainline GTA: earlier games let you pick a female character, but every one of them was a silent avatar rather than a written character.

The setup, per Rockstar's synopsis: Jason and Lucia are a couple who have spent their whole lives with the odds stacked against them. An easy score goes sideways, dropping them into the middle of a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the entire state of Leonida. With trouble closing in from every direction, the only people they can count on are each other. It's a two-protagonist, ride-or-die crime story.

Rockstar has also officially profiled six supporting characters:

  • Cal Hampton: Jason's laid-back friend

  • Boobie Ike: a Vice City businessman with a strip club and a recording studio

  • Dre'Quan Priest: runs a record label

  • Real Dimez: a rising rap duo, Bae-Luxe and Roxy

  • Raul Bautista: a veteran of robbery crews

  • Brian Heder: a smuggler out in the Keys

For full profiles of all nine named people, the extra names in Rockstar's own copy, and where the Tommy Vercetti and voice-actor questions actually stand, see our GTA 6 characters guide.

Editions, Price, and Preorder Bonuses

Two editions are confirmed:

  • Standard Edition: $79.99

  • Ultimate Edition: $99.99, digital-only

No Collector's Edition has been announced.

Preorders opened on June 25, 2026. Every preorder includes the Vintage Vice City Pack (boxed copies get it while stocks last), and digital preorders add one free month of GTA+ on top.

One thing to know before buying physical: boxed copies are Standard Edition only and contain a download code, not a disc. Boxes start shipping from November 12. That's the summary; for the full deep dive on editions, where to buy, and the Standard-to-Ultimate upgrade path, read our complete GTA 6 preorder guide.

GTA 6 Trailers

Two official trailers exist so far. For a full breakdown of each one, their record-setting view counts, and the latest on Trailer 3, see our dedicated GTA 6 Trailers guide.

Trailer 1 dropped on December 4, 2023 and gave us the first look at the game: Vice City, the state of Leonida, and the two protagonists.

Trailer 2 followed on May 6, 2025, with footage captured on PlayStation 5. Rockstar says it drew more than 475 million views across all platforms in its first 24 hours, which the studio called the biggest video launch of all time.

Trailer 3 has not been announced. Rockstar has given no date, and any window you've seen floating around is community speculation, covered in the section below.

Will There Be GTA 6 Online?

Not at launch, as far as anyone officially knows. Rockstar describes GTA 6 as "a single-player experience," and no new version of GTA Online has been announced to ship alongside it. Go in expecting a single-player game; if an online mode comes, it will be later, and it has not been confirmed.

On the related question of carrying anything over: a GTA Online progress transfer to a future GTA 6 online mode has not been announced and should not be expected.

The good news for current players: GTA 5 and GTA Online are not shutting down when GTA 6 launches. Take-Two has said it expects to keep supporting GTA Online, so the current game keeps going. We'll keep covering it every week in our GTA Online weekly updates.

Community speculation (unconfirmed)

None of the following is confirmed by Rockstar; treat every item here as community theory, not fact.

  • Trailer 3 timing: widely expected around late July or August 2026 based on Rockstar's past trailer cadence. There is no confirmed date.

  • Map size: community estimates put the map at roughly two to three times the size of GTA V's, and those estimates have grown as community mapping has progressed. Rockstar has never given a number. Everything it has said about scale is qualitative: it calls Leonida a "massive world", and bills the game as "The biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet".

  • GTA 6 Online: by series precedent, players expect an online mode eventually. GTA Online arrived about two weeks after GTA V, and Red Dead Online followed Red Dead Redemption 2 by about a month in beta. Rockstar has announced nothing for GTA 6.

  • PC release: the roughly 18-month gap between GTA V's console and PC launches fuels fan projections of a 2027–2028 GTA 6 PC release. Unconfirmed.
