What Rockstar, the stores and the ESRB say about GTA 6 Online

As of October 20, 2026, the official sources below either describe GTA VI as single-player or say nothing about online play, and none of them announces an online mode for it.

• Rockstar Newswire (pre-order post): "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S."

• Take-Two and Rockstar's June 24, 2026 press release: "Grand Theft Auto VI features a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet."

• Rockstar's other GTA VI Newswire posts: every other GTA VI post, from the November 2023 announcement to the October 15, 2026 Launch Trailer, says nothing about online play, multiplayer, progress transfer, cross-play or subscriptions.

• The official GTA VI site: the homepage never uses the words "online", "multiplayer" or "single player" about GTA VI. Its only GTA Online text is about the GTA+ pre-order bonus, which is for GTA V (more on that below).

• PlayStation's FAQ: to the question "Does Grand Theft Auto VI have any multiplayer modes or features?", Sony answers: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience."

• PS Store product listing: the play fields read "Offline play only" and "1 players". The badges on the playstation.com game page read "Offline play enabled" and "1 player". Neither lists a PlayStation Plus requirement.

• Microsoft Store: the Xbox listing gives single-player as its only player mode, with no online multiplayer, co-op or cross-platform entry. Its description reads: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience."

The ESRB rating. GTA VI is "rated M for Mature 17+ ... Also includes In-Game Purchases." In-Game Purchases is its only interactive element. GTA V's rating lists both "Users Interact" and "In-Game Purchases". GTA VI's rating lists no user interaction. That matches a single-player launch, but it does not rule out an online mode later. An "In-Game Purchases" element is not evidence of an online mode either. PEGI 18, USK 18 and IARC 18 all list In-Game Purchases, and none of them lists an online-interaction element.

Take-Two. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said at Take-Two's annual shareholder meeting in September 2026, as reported: "There's no recurrent consumer spending anticipated with regard to this launch." That speaks to the launch, not to what comes after it.

GTA 6 Online release date: where things stand

There is no GTA 6 Online release date. As of October 20, 2026, Rockstar has not announced an online mode, so there is no date, window or year to report.

The game you can pre-order today is single-player on launch day, November 19, 2026. Store listings show no multiplayer, no co-op and one player. Price, crossplay and whether an online mode would be free or sold separately are all unannounced, because the mode itself is unannounced.

Until Rockstar says otherwise, any GTA 6 Online date you see is unofficial. We keep unconfirmed claims separate, in Community speculation.

How long GTA Online and Red Dead Online took after launch

This is history, not a forecast. Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both added an online mode after release, but the gaps below tell you nothing about GTA 6.

GTA Online (Grand Theft Auto V)

• September 17, 2013: Grand Theft Auto V launched.

• October 1, 2013: GTA Online opened through a Title Update, 14 days later. Rockstar had said: "Access to Grand Theft Auto Online is free with every retail copy of Grand Theft Auto V and launches on October 1st."

Red Dead Online (Red Dead Redemption 2)

• October 26, 2018: Red Dead Redemption 2 released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

• November 27, 2018: the Red Dead Online beta began, 32 days later, with Ultimate Edition owners getting in first. Full public access followed on November 30.

• December 1, 2020: Red Dead Online became available as a standalone purchase. Rockstar's release post said: "PlayStation Plus and/or Xbox Live Gold are required to play."

Two data points are a pattern at best, not a promise. Rockstar has said nothing about whether GTA 6 will follow either one.

The GTA+ pre-order month is a GTA Online perk, not GTA 6 Online

Digital pre-orders of GTA VI include a free month of GTA+, and that bonus is easy to misread. It is a GTA Online membership for Grand Theft Auto V, not a sign that GTA 6 has an online mode. Rockstar pitches it as "the best way to get the most out of the ever-evolving world of GTA Online," with access to "Grand Theft Auto V and other classic Rockstar titles as part of the GTA+ Games Library." The official GTA VI site lists perks such as a recurring monthly GTA$ 500,000 deposit into your GTA Online character's bank account.

Will GTA Online progress transfer to GTA 6?

Nothing has been announced. As of October 20, 2026, none of these mentions moving GTA Online characters, money or vehicles into GTA VI:

• the PlayStation and Microsoft store pages, including Sony's FAQ

• Take-Two's June 2026 press release

• Take-Two's comments at its September 2026 shareholder meeting, as reported

What happens to GTA Online after GTA 6

GTA Online keeps going for now. Take-Two said in August 2026 that it expects to keep supporting GTA Online, and Rockstar is still updating it. As of October 20, 2026, the latest Newswire event is "Experience Halloween Thrills All Throughout October in GTA Online," the last major update was the Kortz Center Heist on July 14, 2026, and no end-of-service notice has been posted. It runs on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

What would confirm GTA 6 Online

We'll treat a GTA 6 online mode as confirmed only when one of these happens:

• A Rockstar Newswire post announces it.

• The PS Store or Microsoft Store listing changes to show online play, or a player count above 1.

• The ESRB rating adds "Users Interact".

• Take-Two's results mention it. The next results are due November 9, 2026.

Community speculation (unconfirmed)

Nothing in this section comes from Rockstar or Take-Two, so treat it as reporting, not a plan.

• Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said in an August 2026 video that Take-Two has not talked at all, and is not planning to talk anytime soon, about what the new GTA Online will look like.

Will GTA 6 have online multiplayer at launch?

Not according to anything announced. As of October 20, 2026, Rockstar calls GTA VI "a single player experience," and the PS Store lists "Offline play only" and "1 players."

When will GTA 6 Online come out?

There is no GTA 6 Online release date, because no online mode has been announced as of October 20, 2026. GTA 6 itself launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Does GTA 6 have co-op?

No co-op is announced as of October 20, 2026. Sony's FAQ says "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience," and Microsoft's listing has no co-op or online multiplayer entry.

Is GTA 6 online or offline?

Single-player and playable offline, based on the store listings. The PS Store product listing says "Offline play only," and the playstation.com page shows "Offline play enabled" and "1 player."

Do you need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass to play GTA 6?

Neither listing names a subscription requirement: the PS Store listing has no PlayStation Plus requirement, and Microsoft's listing gives single-player as the only player mode. For comparison, Rockstar's post for Red Dead Online's standalone release said "PlayStation Plus and/or Xbox Live Gold are required to play," but that was Red Dead Online, not GTA 6.

Will my GTA Online progress transfer to GTA 6?

Nothing has been announced.

Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 comes out?

How long did GTA Online take to come out after GTA 5?

14 days. GTA V launched September 17, 2013, and GTA Online opened on October 1, 2013, free with the game. Red Dead Online's beta followed Red Dead Redemption 2 by 32 days. Neither gap is a promise for GTA 6.
