Will GTA 5 Online Shut Down When GTA 6 Launches?
No. GTA 5 Online is not shutting down when GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. Rockstar has never announced an end-of-service date for GTA Online on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC, and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told investors on the company's August 7, 2026 earnings call: "we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward."
That is the whole answer for most people. The rest of this guide is for anyone who wants to know exactly what was said, why the money points the same way, what actually happens when Rockstar winds an online game down, which "GTA 5 multiplayer shutting down" headlines in 2026 are real, and what happens to your characters, cars and GTA+ subscription. If you came here wondering will GTA 5 Online shut down because you are deciding whether to keep grinding, the short version is: keep grinding.
Everything here was checked against Rockstar's and Take-Two's own statements in August 2026. We'll update it whenever either company says anything new, the same way we keep the rest of our GTA Online guides current, and we'll fully update it on GTA 6 launch day.

What Take-Two Has Actually Said
The clearest statement on record is from Take-Two's Q1 fiscal 2027 earnings call on August 7, 2026. Asked about GTA Online, Zelnick said: "We do apply significant resources to that, and we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward." On the same call he described the update cadence as "pretty stable" and noted that "we're 13 years after GTA Online was launched and people are still highly engaged and we have record-setting engagement at times."
This is not a one-off. Zelnick gave the same answer six months earlier. On Take-Two's Q3 fiscal 2026 call on February 3, 2026, he said: "I have every reason to believe we'll continue to support GTA Online. There's a great community that loves it, that stays engaged." Two calls, one position, with the GTA 6 date getting closer each time.
Just as important is what has not been said. No Rockstar Newswire post, no Rockstar Support article, no Take-Two press release and no SEC filing has ever given GTA Online an end-of-service date on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC. When Rockstar does retire an online service, it announces it months ahead in writing (see the precedent section below). Nothing of the kind exists for the current game.
Why Rockstar Keeps GTA Online Running
Follow the money and the statements make sense. Take-Two's August 7, 2026 results release put first-quarter fiscal 2027 Net Bookings at $1.39 billion, and recurrent consumer spending (the live-service line that GTA Online's Shark Cards and GTA+ feed into) accounted for 84% of total Net Bookings, down 1% year on year. The same release names the Grand Theft Auto series as one of its largest Net Bookings contributors, second in its own ordering only to NBA 2K, ahead of Toon Blast, Match Factory!, Empires & Puzzles and the Red Dead Redemption series.
That is not a business you switch off the week a new game launches. Zelnick also told investors that GTA V has sold more than 230 million units, and the company reiterated its full-year fiscal 2027 Net Bookings outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion, a year built around the GTA 6 launch. The current game is the thing paying the bills while the new one arrives.
One thing we will not do here is quote a player-count trend. Rockstar and Take-Two have never published GTA Online player numbers, so any chart you see elsewhere is an estimate, not data.
Does GTA 6 Have an Online Mode?
Not as announced. Rockstar's own description, given to IGN in June 2026 and repeated in the PlayStation Store FAQ, is that "Grand Theft Auto 6 is a single-player experience." No online mode has been named, dated or described for the new game. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported in August 2026 that Rockstar has not talked, and is not planning to talk soon, about what a new GTA Online would look like.
That matters for the shutdown question more than anything else. The fear behind "will GTA Online shut down" is that a replacement is waiting in the wings. Officially, there is no replacement. On November 19, 2026, GTA Online is still Rockstar's only official GTA multiplayer service. For the full list of what is and is not confirmed about the new game, start with our GTA 6 everything we know hub.
Which Platforms Keep GTA Online
Take-Two's August 7, 2026 product table lists GTA Online's latest update on five platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Every one of them is still receiving content, and none has an end-of-service notice.
PS4 and Xbox One. Still supported and still in the July 2026 update's platform list. Rockstar has never announced a last-generation cut-off for these consoles.
PC Legacy and PC Enhanced. Rockstar announced a free Enhanced upgrade for PC on February 20, 2025 and released it on March 4, 2025. The older build continues as "GTA V Legacy" and, as far as Rockstar has said, remains supported; the two builds cannot share sessions.
Mobile. GTA V and GTA Online have never been released as native mobile games. Netflix carries Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition (since December 14, 2023), not GTA V.
Now set that against GTA 6. It launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, with no PC version announced (Take-Two's August 7, 2026 table and Rockstar Newswire, November 6, 2025). Zelnick said in a May 2026 Bloomberg interview that "with regard to a big title, PC can be 45%, 50% of the sales" but that "Rockstar always starts on console." The practical upshot: on launch day a PC player cannot buy GTA 6 at all, so GTA Online stays their only official GTA multiplayer service for the foreseeable future. We are not implying a PC port date; none has been announced. Our GTA 6 release date guide tracks the platform list and the full delay history (Fall 2025, then May 26, 2026, then November 19, 2026).
Will GTA Online Keep Getting Updates?
Yes, on every signal available. The most recent major drop is the Kortz Center Heist Summer Update (Title Update 1.73) on July 14, 2026, which Take-Two listed in its August 7, 2026 results across all five platforms. Our Kortz Center Heist guide covers how to start it and what it pays.
On the same results call Zelnick called the GTA Online update cadence "pretty stable." There is no announcement of a final update, and no statement that content stops after GTA 6. The honest caveat is that Take-Two has not promised a specific post-GTA 6 roadmap either; it has said it expects to keep supporting the game, and the cadence line is the closest thing to a forward commitment on content.
The weekly rhythm continues regardless of big drops: bonuses, discounts and Prize Ride rotate every Thursday, and we track every one in our GTA Online weekly updates.
How Rockstar Has Wound Down Online Games Before
Rockstar has a track record here, and it is worth reading because it shows what a real wind-down looks like.
Red Dead Online (2022). In a Rockstar Newswire community update on July 7, 2022, Rockstar said it planned "to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years," because it had "been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series." The same post promised continued substantial GTA Online development. Four years on, Red Dead Online's servers are still up with monthly bonus cycles; there simply have been no large expansions since. That is the honest shape of a Rockstar wind-down: less content, servers stay on.
GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360 (2021). Rockstar announced on June 16, 2021 that GTA Online and Social Club stat tracking would end on those consoles on December 16, 2021, six months ahead. Shark Card sales on those platforms stopped on September 15, 2021. Story mode was unaffected, and no character or money transfer was offered. The stated reason was to focus on PS4, Xbox One, PC and the new consoles.
GTA IV (2014 and 2020). Its PC multiplayer survived the GameSpy shutdown of May 31, 2014 and only ended when Games for Windows Live was removed, with the game returning to Steam on March 19, 2020 as The Complete Edition minus multiplayer and leaderboards.
Our read, and it is ours: every GTA online service that ended did so for platform-generation or middleware reasons. None has ended because a new GTA launched. GTA Online on current hardware meets neither condition.
The "GTA 5 Online Shut Down" Headlines That Are Real
Some 2026 headlines about GTA 5 multiplayer shutting down are accurate. They are just not about GTA Online.
alt:V announced in February 2026 that Take-Two had issued a cease-and-desist. It stopped accepting new community servers on March 2, 2026, took its public server list down on May 4, 2026 and switched everything off on July 6, 2026.
RAGE Multiplayer announced in May 2026 that it had received a Take-Two cease-and-desist; all of its services close on August 31, 2026.
FiveM (Cfx.re, owned by Rockstar since 2023) continues.
All three are multiplayer frameworks for GTA V, the platforms behind roleplay servers. alt:V and RAGE Multiplayer were community projects; FiveM's Cfx.re team has been part of Rockstar since 2023. None of them is Rockstar's GTA Online, none of them touches your GTA Online character, and their closures say nothing about the official game. If a headline says "GTA 5 online servers shutting down" and the article mentions roleplay, alt:V or RAGE MP, that is what it is about.
Your Progress, Your Money and GTA+
Your GTA Online character, bank balance, vehicles, properties and rank stay exactly where they are. Nothing is being wiped, because nothing is being closed.
The question people actually mean is whether any of it carries into GTA 6. Nothing of the kind has been announced: no transfer of money, vehicles, properties, rank or characters to GTA 6 or to any future online mode. The only precedent, the PS3 and Xbox 360 shutdown in 2021, offered no transfer either. Plan on the assumption that what you own in GTA Online stays in GTA Online.
GTA+ is still on sale and unchanged. It costs $7.99 a month on consoles and PC and, per the Rockstar Store page as of August 2026, includes GTA$ 500,000 every month, Vinewood Club amenities with monthly free vehicle claims, 100 personal vehicle slots at the Vinewood Club Garage, a 15% GTA$ bonus on member-exclusive Shark Cards, free CEO and VIP abilities and the GTA+ Games Library. Whether it is worth keeping is the same calculation it was a year ago: if you play most weeks, the monthly GTA$ 500,000 and the free vehicles pay for it; if you are drifting away, cancel. The GTA 6 launch does not change that maths, though note that digital GTA 6 preorders bundle one free month of GTA+ (see our GTA 6 preorder guide), which tells you Rockstar expects the subscription to exist after launch.
What Rockstar Has Never Announced
When the next shutdown rumour lands, check it against this list. As of August 2026, Rockstar and Take-Two have never announced:
a GTA Online shutdown date or a "final update";
that updates stop after GTA 6 launches;
anything called "GTA Online 2";
an online mode for GTA 6, or when one might arrive;
any transfer of money, vehicles, properties, rank or characters into GTA 6;
any GTA 6 map expansion.
If you see one of these stated as fact, look for the Newswire post or earnings transcript behind it. There isn't one.
Community speculation (unconfirmed)
None of the following is confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two; treat every item as community theory, not fact.
"GTA Online 2" and 32-player lobbies. The name and lobby size trace back to the September 18, 2022 Rockstar hack, when clips were posted to GTAForums by the account "teapotuberhacker", and to community analysis of strings around March 2023. Rockstar confirmed the hack happened. It has never confirmed the name or the lobby size.
A full progress reset with no carry-over. This comes from fan posts, chiefly the X account "Rockstar Universe" on November 10, 2023 and Reddit user "ToppleToes" in February 2024. It is a claim, not a sourced leak, and Rockstar has said nothing either way.
Map expansion and Liberty City. Three separate strands get mashed together here. "Project Americas" (2018–19, from Reddit user "JackOLantern1982" and 4chan) is largely debunked. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported in July 2022 that Rockstar planned regular post-launch additions of missions and cities, which is about expansion in general, not a named city. And the December 25, 2023 GTA V source-code leak contained a scrapped GTA V expansion referred to as "LibertyV", which is often miscited as GTA 6 evidence.
"Kortz Center Heist was the last update." A community framing with no source behind it, and it runs directly against Zelnick's "pretty stable" cadence remark on August 7, 2026.
A datamined GTA 6 crossover. Dataminer Tez2 posted on December 10, 2025, the day the update landed, that the "KnoWay Out" missions from the December 2025 "A Safehouse in the Hills" update had previously been called "Sahara Surveillance"; Sahara is a delivery and logistics company in GTA 6. The theory is a reworked crossover tease. It is not evidence of progress transfer.
GTA Online Shutdown FAQ
Is GTA Online shutting down on November 19, 2026?
No. GTA 6 launches that day on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and GTA Online carries on. Rockstar has never announced a shutdown, and Take-Two said on August 7, 2026 that it expects to keep supporting the game.
Has Rockstar ever announced a GTA Online shutdown date?
Only for PS3 and Xbox 360, announced June 16, 2021 and effective December 16, 2021, for platform-generation reasons. No end-of-service date has ever been given for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC.
What exactly did Take-Two say about GTA Online's future?
On the August 7, 2026 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick said: "We do apply significant resources to that, and we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward." He called the update cadence "pretty stable" and said the game still sees "record-setting engagement at times." He said much the same on the February 3, 2026 earnings call.
Will GTA 6 have an online mode at launch?
No online mode has been announced. Rockstar describes GTA 6 as "a single-player experience," and Bloomberg reported in August 2026 that Rockstar is not planning to discuss a new GTA Online soon.
Will my GTA Online money, cars and rank transfer to GTA 6?
No transfer has been announced. Nothing you own in GTA Online has ever been confirmed to carry into GTA 6 or any future online mode, and the only precedent, the 2021 PS3 and Xbox 360 shutdown, offered no transfer either.
Was the Kortz Center Heist the last GTA Online update?
Nothing says so. The Kortz Center Heist Summer Update shipped July 14, 2026, and three weeks later Take-Two described the update cadence as "pretty stable." No final update has been announced.
Are PS4, Xbox One and GTA V Legacy on PC losing GTA Online?
Not as of August 2026. Take-Two's July 2026 update platform list includes PS4 and Xbox One, and Rockstar has never announced a cut-off for them or for the Legacy PC build.
Is GTA+ still worth keeping?
If you play most weeks, probably: $7.99 a month buys GTA$ 500,000, monthly free vehicle claims and the other Vinewood Club perks, and nothing about the GTA 6 launch changes the subscription. Digital GTA 6 preorders even include a month of it.
