Is the Salvage Yard Worth It in GTA Online? Robberies, Towing and the Safe

Guide · By · Published

Is the Salvage Yard worth it in GTA Online? Yes, for most players who will actually use it, because it earns three ways: three weekly robberies worth GTA$ 240,000 to GTA$ 410,000 each, tow jobs at GTA$ 30,000 to GTA$ 40,000 a car, and a daily safe that reaches GTA$ 24,000 per in-game day.

This guide puts all three income streams on one page, then covers which upgrades are worth the money, how to keep a robbery car, and when the yard is not worth buying. For prices, locations and income at a glance, see our Salvage Yard business page.

How the Salvage Yard makes money

The yard has three income streams, and they work best together:

  1. Robberies: steal one of the week's three target cars, then sell it at the docks or salvage it on your lifts. This is the big money.

  2. Tow Truck Services: tow abandoned cars back to the yard and salvage them for a smaller payout.

  3. The daily safe: every in-game day the yard pays into its safe, and the amount depends on the yard's reputation, which you build by towing.

That last link is the key to the whole business. Towing is not just pocket money, it is what keeps the safe paying at the top rate. Skip the tow jobs and the "passive" side shrinks.

How Salvage Yard robberies work

Each week, three target cars appear on the Planning Wall at your yard, and they rotate at the weekly reset. You need to be registered as a CEO, VIP or MC President to use the wall. Pick a target to start that robbery.

Every robbery follows the same pattern: a scope-out, a few preps and freemode tasks, then a high-speed finale where you grab the car. There are five robberies in the rotation:

  • The Duggan

  • The Gangbanger

  • The Cargo Ship

  • The Podium

  • The McTony Robbery

All of them support 1–4 players and every one can be done solo, so you never need to wait on a crew. Which cars are on the wall right now changes every week; our weekly Salvage Yard vehicles page lists the current targets.

Completing each robbery for the first time as the leader, and finishing all of a robbery's Elite Challenges once, are reported to pay one-off GTA$ 50,000 awards. Treat those as a bonus, not part of the regular income.

Sell or salvage: how much a robbery pays

Once the car is back at the yard you have two choices.

Option

Payout

Trade-off

Sell at the docks

Lump sum of roughly GTA$ 240,000 to GTA$ 410,000, depending on the car

Damage on the drive lowers the payout

Salvage on your lifts

About 80% of the sale value, paid out over time

No delivery and no risk, but less money

Selling pays the most. Each robbery gives you one car, so if you sell it straight away the sale is a single delivery you can handle alone. Drive carefully: every scrape comes off the payout.

Salvaging is the safe option when you are short on time or would rather not risk a delivery in a busy lobby.

You can also hold up to four stolen cars and sell them together. A multi-car sale reportedly needs one driver per car, so solo players are better off selling each car as it comes in.

How to keep a robbery car

Most weeks you cannot keep the car: it has to be sold or salvaged. On certain weeks, though, Rockstar makes a target claimable as your personal vehicle, complete with its special plate, for a small fee of about GTA$ 20,000.

Which targets are claimable changes weekly, so check the Salvage Yard vehicles page before you start the robbery if keeping the car matters to you.

Tow Truck Services

Towing needs a tow truck, so you have to buy one of the Tow Truck upgrades first. Then:

  1. Climb into your tow truck at the yard and pick Tow Truck Service.

  2. Drive to the marked abandoned car and hook it up.

  3. Bring it back to the yard. If a wanted level triggers on the way, lose it first.

Each towed car goes on a lift to be salvaged. That takes 96 minutes, or 48 with the Staff upgrade, and usually pays GTA$ 30,000 to GTA$ 40,000 when it finishes. Two cars can salvage at the same time.

Towed cars are only for salvage: you cannot sell them or keep them. Their real value is the reputation they build, which drives the daily safe.

Daily income: the safe and reputation

Every in-game day (48 real minutes) the yard pays into its safe. How much depends on the yard's reputation, which works much like Nightclub popularity: towing raises it, and the higher it is, the bigger the daily deposit, up to GTA$ 24,000 per in-game day.

Reputation slips when you stop towing, so a tow every hour or two keeps it near the top. One hands-on account says about four tows in a row take it to the maximum.

The safe also has a cap. The Wall Safe upgrade raises it to GTA$ 250,000; without it, one hands-on account puts the limit at about GTA$ 100,000. Either way, empty it whenever you are at the yard.

This is why the yard is not fully passive. It keeps paying while you do other things, but it only stays near the top rate if you keep towing. For businesses that truly run on their own, see our passive income guide.

If you run the Money Fronts, owning a Salvage Yard also counts as one of the businesses that feed the Hands On Car Wash safe.

Tow Truck vs Tow Truck Beater

They are the same truck apart from the rust. The Beater does everything the Tow Truck does for GTA$ 450,000 less, so buy the Beater. You need one or the other: without a tow truck there is no towing, and without towing the safe's daily deposit stays well below its GTA$ 24,000 top rate.

Is the Wall Safe worth it?

It is worth it if you go long stretches without visiting the yard. At the top rate of GTA$ 24,000 per in-game day, a GTA$ 250,000 safe takes about ten in-game days (roughly eight hours of play) to fill, and once it is full the deposits stop. If you are at the yard every session anyway, it can wait.

Staff is the next priority for regular towers, since faster salvage means more tow payouts on the lifts. Trade Rates and tints can wait or be skipped.

How to buy a Salvage Yard and which location

To buy one, answer Yusuf's phone call, then buy from the Maze Bank Foreclosures website. There are five locations:

Location

Price

Paleto Bay

GTA$ 1,620,000

Sandy Shores

GTA$ 2,030,000

Murrieta Heights

GTA$ 2,420,000

Strawberry

GTA$ 2,570,000

La Puerta

GTA$ 2,690,000

Strawberry is the usual pick: it is central, and most robbery and tow work happens in Los Santos. The two northern yards are cheaper but a long drive from the action. Our Salvage Yard business page compares every location and tracks discounts.

Is the Salvage Yard worth it?

Yes, if you will run it. A single robbery sale pays roughly GTA$ 240,000 to GTA$ 410,000, so the Strawberry yard pays back its price in somewhere around 7 to 11 robbery sales, before you count tow payouts or the safe.

The full value comes from stacking all three streams: run the weekly robberies, tow a car every hour or two while you do other things, and empty the safe. That makes it a strong fit for solo players, since every part of it works without a crew, as long as you sell each car on its own. Our solo money-making guide shows where it sits alongside other solo earners.

It is not worth it if you want true hands-off income. The safe depends on towing, and robberies are active work.

Wait for a bonus week

Rockstar regularly runs Salvage Yard events: 2X daily income, 2X tow payouts, 2X robbery sale and salvage value, and 25–40% off the property and its upgrades. Buying during a sale and grinding during a 2X week are the best ways to get your money back faster.

Salvage Yard FAQ

How much money can you make from a Salvage Yard in GTA Online?

Each robbery sale pays roughly GTA$ 240,000 to GTA$ 410,000, with three robberies a week. Tow jobs add GTA$ 30,000 to GTA$ 40,000 a car, and the safe pays up to GTA$ 24,000 per in-game day at full reputation.

Is the Salvage Yard wall safe worth it?

Yes, if you don't visit the yard often. It raises the safe's cap to GTA$ 250,000, which takes about ten in-game days (roughly eight hours of play) to fill at the top rate, so you can go much longer between collections.

Tow Truck or Tow Truck Beater?

The Beater. It is identical to the GTA$ 1,100,000 Tow Truck apart from the rusty look and costs GTA$ 650,000.

What do you do with a Salvage Yard in GTA 5?

Run the weekly robberies from the Planning Wall, tow abandoned cars back for salvage, and collect the daily safe. Towing also builds the reputation that raises the safe's daily deposit.

Can you keep Salvage Yard robbery cars?

Only on certain weeks, when Rockstar makes a target claimable for a fee of about GTA$ 20,000. Other weeks you must sell or salvage it. Towed cars can never be kept.

Can you do Salvage Yard robberies solo?

Yes. All five robberies support 1–4 players and can be done solo. Register as a CEO, VIP or MC President first.

How do you start a Salvage Yard robbery?

Register as a CEO, VIP or MC President, go to your yard and pick one of the week's three targets on the Planning Wall.

Is the Salvage Yard passive income?

Partly. The safe pays every in-game day, but the amount depends on reputation, which drops if you stop towing.
